Was there any inspiration for the piece? Unfortunately, I can't say that there is because I did not expect that one to get anything, it’s actually probably actually my least favorite piece. I had some other really good ones but for some reason, it was that one that got the award. What type of materials did you use? I used watercolor for most of it and a marker for outlining. How did you feel when you found out you won? I wasn't too surprised that I got a gold key only because I‘ve gotten a gold key in the past, I’ve also gotten 2 silver keys, so I wasn't to surprised that I got something, but the fact that it was this piece surprised me.

Six pieces receive Scholastic Gold Key recognition

Winning a Scholastic Gold Key means you earn an automatic consideration for national awards and even scholarships.

“I just couldn’t believe it when I found out I won. The last time I won was freshman year and I had already gotten over that because it’s so difficult to win I was debating if it would happen, so when I found out I just felt this sense of accomplishment as an artist.” senior Jeba Mahapatra said.

One artist had no expectation for the piece they sent in and was shocked when their piece won.

“I can’t say that I wasn’t surprised because I did not expect that one to get anything, it’s actually probably actually my least favorite piece. I had some other really good ones but for some reason, it was that one that got the award.” junior Samantha Sipes said.

With some of the pieces taking up to sixty hours and endless concentration, winning a gold key is no easy feat.

“I was beyond excited, I actually didn’t know until an art teacher emailed my parents so that’s how I found out but I was really happy because I know how hard these are to win.” sophmore Analiese Cruz said.
