The Giver

The GiverHow many people have ever heard of Louis Lowry?  The name may sound like a boy’s name, but Louis Lowry is a woman.  She is the author of a book called The Giver.

The Giver is about a “utopia”.  A utopia is a “perfect world”.  The Romans created the term utopia and their definition of utopia is not real world.  The Giver is about a boy named Jonas. He lives in this utopia.  In this utopia, no one has their own job.  Citizens don’t get to pick their spouse, and don’t get to pick their jobs.  Every year during December, there is a “birthday party” for every one.  No one celebrates their birthday on the day their born.  Everyone’s birthday is in December.  On the day Jonas turns 12, he gets the job of  “The Receiver”.  On the days he is trained, he “receives” memories of our time.  After awhile, he finds out the truth about many things in the community.

Why did I stop?  Because, I want you to read the book and find out what happens.  If you read this post and/ or read the book and you like it, then see the movie when it comes out in 2011.

Until next time, enjoy books and movies!!
