Google is a very informative website. Most of us use it almost everyday, but never wondered how old it is or who invented it. Here are 10 interesting facts.
Larry Page, and Sergey Brin started Google as a research project at Stanford University.
Google got its name by accident, the founder misspelled the word “googol,” which means the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes. The one hundred zeroes represented the amount of information that was on the Internet.
The Google home page is so sparse because the founders did not know HTML and just wanted to create a quick interface.
At first there was no submit button which means that users had to use the “return” key to generate a Google search.
When Google introduced the “Did you mean” feature the traffic doubled, it was an advanced spell-check that every one likes.
On 1999 USA Today named Google a “hot site.”
Google users apparently never feel “lucky,” since the “I feel lucky” is almost never used. However, in trials it was discovered that users saw it as a comfort button and did not want it removed.
Larry Page’s dorm room was the first data center for Google.
When Page and Brin tried to find buyers to license their search technology, one portal CEO told them “As long as we’re 80 percent as good as our competitors, that’s good enough. Our users don’t really care about search.”
Google was born on September 15,1997. So Google is basically 15 years old.
