City Year Highlight – Sarah Ann Escamilla

Sarah Ann Escamilla serves to raise students’ self-esteem though positivity and encouragement, by helping students realize their full potential. Sarah serves to help them build a better future for themselves. As a 22 year old graduate of St. Mary’s University with a degree in psychology, Sarah looks forward to using her recently acquired drivers license and serving at Krueger.

Sarah came from a small town just outside of Houston called El Campo. Most of the other members said that City Year wasn’t around in their school, but she did. She just didn’t find out until she was a Junior in college. In college she went to St. Mary University:

"St. Mary’s was and is an EXCELLENT school. The students and faculty are all so compassionate, creative, and smart. I had a wonderful experience there. Growing up I never had a school or place that I was sad to leave, but graduating from St. Mary’s was bittersweet for me. I was excited to graduate because it was such a huge accomplishment for me, but I was sad to leave because I was going to miss being a part of St. Mary’s University."

During her time at St. Mary’s University she got a degree in psychology. When we asked her why she wanted that she said:

"I wanted to study Psychology because I love helping people and I think human nature is fascinating. Psychology can explain to us why we do some of the things we do, and why we are the way we are. Finding out more about ourselves can teach us more about others and let us lead happy and healthier lives."
