As football season begins, it’s good to look back at the Volunteer football history. Forty years ago, in, 1971, the Vols took the 4A state title lead by Tommy Kramer.
This was the culmination of an impressive run that began in 1963 by defeating defending Class 4A state champion Brackenridge. Linus Baer lead that team. That year they took a 55-48 playoff victory against Warren McVea and the Eagles that some claim was the best game in Texas football history.
This year would be the fortieth anniversary of that state championship. Looking back is nostalgic but looking forward to the season gives hope that this will be the year of the Volunteer comeback.
