On Friday, March 27, Jackson-Keller Elementary School held a motivational STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiniess) pep-rally honoring 4th and 5th grade students. The pep rally consisted of the state champion Lee Drum Line led by Band Director Brannon Baker, performing throughout the pep-rally.
Christina Alanis, Dance Director, introduced the Lee Cheerleaders and Dance Team who entertained the students with a high kick performance and cheer routine. One former Jackson-Keller student who is currently a senior Lee dancer spoke to the students about hard work and dedication. She encouraged the students to try their best on anything they put their mind to.
Following the Lee performances, teachers played several games and expressed their strategies for winning. Mr. Losoya and Ms. Garcia played “stacking cups”, the winner reminded the students “Stay focused and reach your goal.” Ms. Garcia reminded the students, “It’s not about finishing first, but staying on task and completing your goal.”
Other games included building a house out of hoola-hoops, balancing a fresbie on your head and shooting a ball through a moving basket. Each teacher shared their strategy for the game and how they could relate to the STAAR test.
A photostory capturing 4th – 5th grade students working on reading and math concepts was showcased to the theme, “Best day of my life.” At the conclusion of the pep-rally 4th– 5th grade teachers, counselors, instructional coaches, and administration surrounded the students with posters featuring positive messages such as “Believe,” “You Can do This!”, “Super STAR.”
“We wanted to create a positive atmosphere encouraging the students to eat a good breakfast, get a goodnight’s rest, apply their thinking, and be motivated for excellent results on the state mandated assessments,” said Anna Nicolai, principal at Jackson-Keller. “It takes a village to raise a child and today between our partnership with Lee and our Jackson-Keller staff, a support system was showcased so that our students know how much we care for them.”
