Repeated Thefts On, Near Campus

The catalytic converter helps to reduce airborne pollutants that could harm people as well as the environment. Effectively turning 90% of unbreathable, harmful toxins into more manageable fumes. The efficiency of the catalytic converter isn’t the reason for the mass increase in the theft of this car part. It’s the valuable materials that lie within.

A catalytic converter is an important emission control device that is found in the exhaust system of most modern cars. It is designed to reduce harmful exhaust emissions by converting toxic gasses such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons into less harmful substances. This process is known as catalytic oxidation. The catalytic converter is composed of a ceramic honeycomb structure coated with a catalyst such as platinum, palladium, and/or rhodium.

The importance of a catalytic converter cannot be overstated. It is an essential component of a car’s emission control system and helps to reduce the number of harmful pollutants that are released into the atmosphere. This leads to healthier air, which is beneficial for both the environment and public health. Catalytic converters also help improve a car’s fuel efficiency and performance, resulting in more efficient use of fuel and ultimately, cost savings for the driver.

Common misconceptions of catalytic converters are that without them, a car won’t turn on or function. It can, but the driver is unaware that it’s gone. However, over a long period, it’s unsustainable. But, newer cars can come pre-equipped with sensors that can detect if they’re gone.

Unfortunately, catalytic converters are a popular target for thieves as they contain valuable metals that can be sold for a profit. The theft of catalytic converters is on the rise and is a problem that affects many car owners. To protect against theft, it is important to invest in security measures such as wheel locks and alarms. It is also recommended to park inside a garage as well.

When asked about her thoughts on the recent catalytic converter theft, “I personally don’t care much about it but, I think it’s unfortunate that they’re being stolen,” Ms.Greathouse said.

“Although it doesn’t affect me, I think its tragic,” Ms. Muire said.

There are various ways to prevent your catalytic converter theft. By painting your catalytic converter to make it more traceable. Inscribe your VIN number into your catalytic converter so it will make it less likely for thieves to take it. Knowing your vehicle is also important because some specific cars are targeted since it’s easier to take the catalytic converter.
