Looking into the bleachers next to the band you will see a sea of identical high pony tails neatly wrapped in clean bows. That is until you reach Lawrence Acosta spot. Aside from a lack of ponytail what makes Acosta so unique is he is the only male in pep squad.

“My favorite part is just getting to dance and doing something  I’ve wanted to do and that makes me really happy,” Acosta, 11,  said.

Aside from a few differences such as an adapted uniform, and a few different dance moves Acosta is just your regular pep squad member.

“I’ve gotten a few negative remarks but I ignore them. I try to stay positive with everything that I do,” Acosta said.

The team practices every day in anticipation of football game performances, competition, and stand routines.

“I think that some moves can stay the same but some have to be changed. If I did some of the moves the girls do I don;t think I would be taken seriously,” Acosta said.

Acosta is one of the first guys to join a spirit organization at Mac for a few years now He plans to continue his spirit career by trying out for the Lassie and Brahmadora dance teams. Acosta may even start a trend to break status quo and follow your dreams.
