Girls soccer rallies past Steele and into the second round

In the playoffs for the 5th year in a row, the girls soccer team defeated Steele 2-1 in the first round of playoffs March 26.

Played at Toyota Field, the teams met in a rematch of last year’s 2nd round where Steele won 1-0.

The teams were tied until Steele scored from outside of the box with 30 minutes left in the game. Mac became more aggressive and managed to score a goal off of a volley by freshman Bella Von Toussaint with 9 minutes left to salvage their season. Junior midfielder Ana Campa knew that the team had left it all on the field.

“Our energy went up [after Steele scored], we knew that it was win or go home, it was either we scored a goal or we packed up for next season and we wanted to win to play next round,” Campa said.

The teams fought in extra time and Ana Campa managed to put the girls ahead 7 minutes into the first half of extra time.

“We knew we could do it,” Campa said. “We knew what we had to do to win and we went out and executed it.”

The girls will face the NISD district champions Brandeis in the second round at Blossom East, April 2.
