No Longer on the Wall: Gym Mural Replaced

Over the summer, the mural in the large gym was painted over and had a banner placed over it.

The mural was a senior gift from the class of 2007, and art teacher Mr. Ricketts was paid by the seniors to paint the mural, however, it was left incomplete.

“I talked to some folks about maybe redoing it and it wasn’t finished, it was probably 95 percent done but we wanted to get it 100 percent done,” AP Mr. Peterson said. “We just were never able to really get that happening.”

The final conclusion to paint over the mural and place a banner over it was made in last spring.

“We couldn’t ever get to work with his schedule and the sports schedules. There were [also] issues with matching the paints and stuff like that.” Mr. Peterson said. “There was never any discussion as far as what we were gonna do [with Mr. Ricketts]. We just thought well you know what if we can’t get any movement going with touching up and finishing the existing one then maybe we should just go [with the banner.]”

Mr. Ricketts was the only one to ever work on the mural, no students or other artists ever touched it.

“It’s just too bad [the class of 2007 will] come back [and won’t see the mural,]” Mural artist and art teacher Mr. Ricketts said.

The mural was projected to be 50 by 80 feet upon completion.

“Seven years went by but I only needed one day,” Mr. Ricketts said. “It would’ve been one of the largest [murals] in the state.”
