Get to know Your Brahmas: Q&A With Sebastian Tapia

Sebastian Tapia is a senior, who plays the trumpet and has been in band for four years now.

Q: What’s your role in band?

A: My role in band right now is that I’m a drum major, so that’s one of the student conductors that conducts the marching band, before I used to be a section leader for the trumpets, and then before that I was like a person in charge of the music, like filing all of the music.

Q: What made you want to play the trumpet?

A: I didn’t want to play it initially, but when we auditioned for it in sixth grade I fell in love with it. I really loved the sound.

Q: What’s your favorite key to play?

A: My favorite key to play in is C, it’s the natural key, there are no flats, no sharps, everything is just natural. It sounds beautiful.

Q: What’s your favorite piece to play?

A: My favorite piece to play, I think “Sleigh Ride” around Christmas time cause it gets me really excited and festive.

Q: What’s the most difficult piece that you’ve done?

A: I’m going to say “Sleigh Ride” cause at the end of the song we have to make a little horse sound with the trumpet it’s really weird, you have to like shake your trumpet and it’s supposed to sound like a horse it’s really hard to figure it out.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about band?

A: My favorite thing about band is that over the years I’ve learned so much from it. I learned a lot of leadership skills, it’s taught me to be responsible, and manage my time well. Its given me a second home, it’s given me a ton of friends and I’ve learned to be more social.

Q: What is your favorite type of genre of music to play?

A: My favorite type of genre is classical. I play a lot of everything, that’s what I like about the trumpet, you can play everything with it.

Q: Do you play any other instruments besides the trumpet?

A: I can play the piano a little bit and I can’t play the guitar but I’m trying to learn right now.

Q: How long did it take you to learn the trumpet?

A:  This is my seventh year on trumpet, so it has taken me a while.

Q: What’s your favorite movie?

A: My favorite movie is “Star Wars”, the fourth one. That’s what I put on my name tag at work.

Q: What’s your favorite book?

A: My favorite book is “1984” by George Orwell.

Q: Whats your favorite TV show?

A: My favorite TV show. I really like “The Walking Dead” a lot but I really love “The Office” it’s really funny. It’s a tie between those two.
