MLK: A Lasting Legacy

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential figures in the civil rights movement. King advocated for equal rights for African Americans throughout the 50s and 60s. His speeches have had a huge impact on the 20th century and continue to inspire people today, he worked to ensure equal rights for everyone, race aside.

“We’re most familiar with his opinions on race relations and that everyone should judge each other by the content of their character and not the color of their skin,” AVID teacher Reagan Beres said. “I believe that the kids at school are really good about that. I think our school is really welcoming of everybody, I see it in our Unity Club that kids are welcoming to kids of all race, color, creed, religion, and that’s definitely an extension of his message.”

San Antonio is known for having the biggest MLK march in America, with about 300,000 people participating each year. The march is widely known, but the lesser-known events are still just as important.
