For the seniors, the band competition that took place on Oct. 22 meant a lot more than just the last competition of the season. It meant no more long journeys by the band family to competitions, no more heart pounding moments of waiting for the judges to announce that they’ve placed, and finally – the last time the underclassmen would compete with the seniors side by side. On the other hand, the last band competition of the season doesn’t mean that they’ll stop performing all together.

“They are still practicing really hard,” band director Philip Flynn said. “We will do a new halftime show at each of the remaining football games.”

According to Flynn, the scores of the band’s hard work that began during the summer proved to be a success – the students were praised with a First Division “Superior” rating by the judges.

“[Our last performance was] one of our better ones,” senior Jessica Castillo said. “I like competing; it’s fun it watch other bands’ competition performances.”

Although the band is still practicing for the halftime shows at football games, it’s more relaxed to Castillo and fellow senior Esteban Barboza.

“We get to relax in band now,” Barboza said. “We get to do more fun stuff. I will [miss the band], band is my second family.”

Even though they won’t have the same time commitments for anymore, Castillo and Barboza will still be in the habit of waking up early for class.
