‘Guys and Dolls’ A Good Bet

By Alexandra Gutierrez

Let’s roll the clock back about 60 years. Let’s go to New York City. Let’s meet some gangsters, some gamblers, a few short-skirted showgirls, and a couple of mission dolls. Let’s get carried away in this mixture, sing some show tunes, and break into dance in the middle of the streets. Let’s be “Guys and Dolls.”

“Guys and Dolls” is a romantic comedy that hit the Broadway stage in 1950. It features music from Frank Loesser and a script by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. The original production ran for 1,200 performances and won the Tony award for best musical. The play was also selected as the winner for the 1952 Pulitzer Prize for Drama but no actual award was given that year. The fine arts department’s production of this musical runs through tomorrow night.

This musical stars a gambler, Nathan Detroit (junior Garrett Henry), who meets high-rolling gambler, Sky Masterson (junior Andrew Sanchez). Detroit bets Masterson that he can’t convince Save-A-Soul Missionary Sister Sarah Brown (senior Kristen Hoelscher) to go on a trip with him to Havana, Cuba. While Masterson takes this bet and works his charms on Brown, Detroit is trying to avoid walking down the aisle with his fiancée of 14 years, Miss Adelaide (senior Samantha Lowery).

With the help of choir, band, and orchestra, theater is able to make this old favorite enjoyable in a new way. The cast holds a lot of talent with voices that shine with every melody. This version of the musical is definitely worth a watch, but make sure you have a few hours to spare as the whole production takes about two and half hours.

Two more performances will take place on Feb. 3 and 4 at 7 p.m. in the Madison PAC. Admission is $8.
