Mavs Got Talent

The lights began to dim and the crowd screams as the curtains inch open to reveal five eager band members ready to fill the auditorium with their music.
On September 27 the talent show was held in the auditorium to give students the chance to show case their hidden skills.
The audition process was a long and difficult process due to the amount of people who showed interest in wanting to get on stage and perform.
“We had over 50 people audition this year and they knew that they had to ‘perform’ their act, not just go in and sing it like it was a karaoke party,” guitar class teacher Micheal Murphy said. “The hardest thing this year was to narrow it down to 27 acts because we had many many more that were talented; we just didn’t have enough time.”
Out of the 27 chosen performers, Magnum Opus was chosen to open the show. Although they started out nervous, it quickly went away as their song went on.
“[Performing in front of my peers] was truly ideal cause I looked out and saw all of my main supporters right there in the second row cheering me on,” senior band member Joey Hechler said. “I was really nervous at first and when I saw [the crowd] clapping it all went away and I just let the music flow from my soul.”
The crowd became involved as the show grew into the night. Freshman Lauren Contreras who sang “Someone like you” by Adele received a standing ovation after finishing her performance.
“I was excited and kind of wanted to cry because that was the first time I was able to show everyone I could sing. To show everyone who I was,” Contreras said.
Not only were there singing acts, but other talents such as dancing or playing an instrument were apart of the show.
“I chose [to dance Mexican Folkloric] because I think it’s really fun and everyone does other dances, I wanted to do something different,” freshman Cassandra Fleming said.
Usually, the choir department takes control of talent show as one of their annual fundraisers, but this year the guitar class jumped at the opportunity.
“Choir has always sponsored talent show but [the guitar class] decided that because we are brand new and had no immediate fundraising opportunities that this would be a great new one to have from now on,” Murphy said.
Audience members enjoyed seeing all of the talent that the school had to offer.
“It went really well. I saw a lot more talented people. They were all so different. performance wise. I didn’t know Madison had so many talented people,” senior Ashley Choi said.
