PALs Pink Out Proves Successful

By Randee Schmitt

When we think of pink, some of us think of bubble gum, while some imagine roses, and others see visions of cotton candy or strawberry ice cream. In contrast, during the month of October the first thing to come to a Maverick’s mind  is breast cancer awareness.

The PALs organized a Pink Out football game on Oct. 13 in hopes of raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. By selling pink t-shirts to be worn at the game, the PALs were able to raise $500 to donate to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Along with the shirts, the PALs also handed out stickers and pink pom-poms, as well as painted faces during the game in support of their cause.

“I think there was a really good turnout at the game. We have some great new ideas for next year to make it even better, but we were still very impressed with this year’s support and the turnout,” PALs sponsor Gretchen Barrera said.

Spectators were not the only ones who could be seen in pink. Many of the Maverick football players also had pink on their uniforms, as well as the horsemen and most of the coaches, trainers, and administrators.

“The whole band bought pink headbands that we wore during the game to show our support. Whenever I was on the field during half time everyone in the stands was wearing pink and they were shaking their ink pom-poms,” color guard member Celine Morris said. “I think it was good for everyone to see that Madison supports breast cancer awareness month fully.”

Currently the leading cause of cancer deaths, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women. With funds and research, foundations are hopeful that a cure for breast cancer is on the horizon.

“People I know have been affected by breast cancer. It really makes me realize how important life is and that you can’t take it for granted. You have to help out as much as you can in any way because it all helps out in the end,” PAL Troy Guajardo said.

The PAL sponsors look forward to next year’s Pink Out game, hoping for the same – if not better – kind of response and support. The PALs also plan to make another donation to the Susan G. Komen Cancer Research Foundation in the spring.

“While I was on the field during half time with the Maverick Corral kids I saw there were a lot of people there and I could tell there were lots of people in pink. But, it could always be more. I hope to see the stands totally pink next year with even more support,” PAL Sandra Loza said.
