Organizations Advocate Anti-Bullying Awareness

For a whole week, the campus was filled with students and teachers dressing in outrageous outfits and colors to address the cruelties of bullies. From Jan. 18 to 21, PALS, Student Council, and Unity Club sponsored anti-bullying week.

“I would say the whole purpose of the week is to promote a more tolerant student body and to cut down on bullying,” Unity Club sponsor Cynthia Suarez said. “It helps people feel safe and to help students find campus more welcoming.”

Each day of the week focuses on the four main types of bullying such as cyber bullying, verbal bullying, covert bullying and physical bullying during Tacky Day, Twin Day, Superhero Day and Black Out Day. Each day contained one of these sayings, ‘don’t mistreat others who are different’, ‘friends don’t let friends bully’, ‘stand up against bullies’, and ‘black out bullying.’

“For each day we dress out it helps get a message home and bring more awareness,” PALS sponsor Gretchen Barrera said. “When they see PALS, Student Council and Unity club kids that are dressed up, it will blend itself into conversations about why we’re doing this and why bullying is so bad.”

For the first time, PALS, Student Council and the Unity club joined together to organize this event. The members of these groups would meet together to plan the dress themes, phrases and the fundamentals of the week.

“The similarities of our organizations is to promote a positive campus and positive actions among peers,” Student Council sponsor Julie Masters said. “This was a great way for us to join together and share our common goal to promote positive experiences in a positive environment here on campus.”
