Not So Silent Night

The sounds of the season flowed across the auditorium last Tuesday evening as the four Madison bands put together a compilation of friendly carols for the community to enjoy at this special holiday band concert. Instrumental versions of many popular Christmas songs were performed to help welcome in holiday spirit.

The evening was far from quiet as the Concert Band’s rendition of Silent Night, directed by Madison band director Philip Flynn, kicked off the concert with gusto. This classic tune was promptly followed by an upbeat adaption of Up on a Housetop, directed by Evan Berry. With the performance of each new song came a unique musical experience to the individual listener, keeping the entire audience engaged and entertained through the night. Non-traditional twists embellished many traditional songs, such as Sleigh Ride performed by Honors Band and Symphonic Band I performing Merry Christmas Everyone and Ukrainian Bells, a crowd and band favorite.

“My favorite song to play is Ukrainian Bells,” sophomore band member Isabelle Guevara  said. “It’s kind of a dark and fast song.”

The concert was deemed a success as members of the audience left that night still humming to the tune of their favorite songs.

“The kids performed at a high level and we directors were pleased with the performances of all four bands,” Flynn said.
