Fight to the Finish

A little rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the varsity tennis team before they headed into a difficult match against Johnson High School last Wednesday. Despite delays caused by unexpected showers, the team marched out on to the court with heads up high and left that evening with a better understanding of what to improve upon for the rest of the season.

Although the team worked for a win with undeniable tenacity, the players went home with a final score of 10-0 in favor of Johnson.

“There were good attitudes and good effort,” Coach Tim Shuler said. “With a lot of the matches, we were only one point away from winning.”

Despite the outcome of the game, the players got the chance to target their strengths and areas for improvement. With this information, the team can sharpen their skills in practice to better prepare themselves for the next match.

“A strength was groundstrokes from the base line and a weakness was net game,” junior Myles Garcia said.

Daily practices prepare the team for the season ahead. The team works to improve in areas such as footwork, focus, and technique.

“We run, we lift weights,” junior Emily Danielson said. “We work on drills and individual needs and we play practice matches.”

Stop by and watch the tennis team put their hard work into action at their next match against Lee High School at Blossom Athletic Center on Tuesday, September 9 at 4:30.
