Shifted… a short story

Imagine the pain they must have gone through. No one was prepared for what was to come. On top of that, when it did, it was so fast. It was too quick. It flooded in and….it killed everything. Anything. The air densed around it. We should have seen it coming but, our time was so sweet. It was bliss. Everything was…ok. We were fine. We ended it, right? It should be over, right? We can live in peace now, right? Then how come, I couldn’t save them? Why didn’t I see it coming? I should have known better. Better than this. This person, that stands in front of me. So innocent. So, happy. So…naive. You know better. You should have known. Yet, you go blind. Unaware of what’s around you. Skipping time; rushing emotions. I never knew it what have killed you.

I couldn’t take it. Their bodies lay still. It bugged me that they weren’t cold. They breathed small breaths. Barely alive. Their colors drained from very being. I would never forget that day. It was snowing. It seemed the Earth, was preparing their graves. I couldn’t save them. I couldn’t do anything, but watch. They died slowly. It was too much to bare. However, I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. My dear sister ley there. Shivering and cold. She was more alive than any of them. I refused to save her. So there she lay, dead. They’re all dead. So much blood. So much chaos. It was too much. Could I handle this? I’m alone. I could have done something. Everything’s dead. The forest. Our house. My sister. Them. It’s getting hot. It’s burning. I can’t see. What is this burning? Why does it hurt? Why can’t I cry?  I feel so dead. I can’t feel anything. It’s not my fault. It’s not my fault. It’s yours. It’s all you. You did this to me. To them. I’ll fight. Till the very end I won’t give up. I’ll make my own fate. I’ll enter my own door. And win the war.

I’ll never forget that day. It was cold. He was here. It was a dream. As I shifted on my side, I cried. It’s too late. I’m too late. For the first time ever, it began to snow.

“Now, I need you to slow down. Try to think of what happened first and go from there”. In a small office, filled with a desk and a couch, a woman sat on a chair. Her voice was quite monotone. She was beautiful, but she had this….aura. I couldn’t quite figure out what was off. Maybe it was just me. A few weeks back, I had started counseling. At first I didn’t want to talk. I couldn’t trust her. Eventually I warmed up to her. Today I decided to tell her. Tell her what I saw. From the look on her face,it seems she doesn’t understand me. I guess I’ll try to slow down.  “It all started after the announcement of the war-”, she cut me off. “ Have you ever wondered why they’ve been sending you here?”, she asked, quietly. Yes, that has been one of the many questions on my mind. “Well, it’s because,…they think you’re crazy.” she was nervous. I could tell. Why would they think that. It happened. It did! They’re dead. “To be completely straight, Jax…there”, she was hesitant to continue,”there was no war. There were no other when we found you. You were sick and just, started spouting nonsense”. No. That can’t be. I saw them. They were right there! She’s lying. She’s lying. She’s lying she’s lying she’s lying she’s lying she’s lying! “ YOU’RE LYING!!!!”, it was a scream of pure rage. Security busted in and held me down. What was I thinking? She wouldn’t have believed me anyway. This reminds me. Of that one time. I overheard some doctors talking. They had said, “Hey, have you heard about that girl? The one who killed all those people?” The other had replied with,” she wasn’t in her right mind. Why do you think she’s here?” They both laughed. I knew it couldn’t be true. Right?

The guard had me against the floor. It was cold. It was…cold? It was cold. I remember now. I know what happened. “ Hey, now I know you’re lying”, I was a little shaken. Why would she do this? “What do you mean?”, she asked, questionably nervous. You had me fooled. Thinking I wouldn’t remember. I did. If i’m going down, I’m bringing you with me. “ You’ve always been such a good liar”, I laughed. She bolted out the door. The guard gave me a confused look. His eyes widened as he figured out what had happened. Out the door he went. I sat there on the floor. Grinning. “ You were there too”, I smiled. I walked over to the window. We were about eleven stories high. Enough to kill someone…I jumped out.
