The sport of basketball was invented in 1891 by Canadian native Dr. James Naismith of Almonte, Ontario. Ironically, the first set of games were played with fruit baskets. The game has come along way from its early roots.
Since those early days in which the game was first introduced the popularity of basketball has grown tremendously. Many students at Roosevelt have different opinions about which professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association is the best.
Whether it’s the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets, or Los Angeles Lakers, many Rough Riders love the sport enough to sport their favorite team’s jersey in the hallways. Let’s see what a sample of Roosevelt students had to say when asked which team is their personal favorite. Let the madness of basketball opinions begin.
“I like the Spurs, because they have become really good and I think they will win the championship,” Erin Miereles, sophomore, said.
That’s one of many such positive things people have said about the Spurs this season, and with the best record currently in the league, it’s difficult to argue to the contrary. Let’s see what other teams Roosevelt students liked when asked their basketball team preference.
“My favorite basketball team would be the Lakers and the Houston Rockets. Both of them are pretty good teams,” Wendy Marrot, freshmen, said.
The Rockets are usually a playoff contender like the Lakers, Mavericks, and Spurs. Even the most die-hard Spurs fans know their arch-rival, the Lakers, have a huge fan following including Junior Henry White.
“My favorite team would have to the Lakers. No doubt,” White said.
There’s a lot of debate as to who is the best team in the NBA and the Spurs have the best record now. Guess we will need to stay tuned and see what happens in the NBA Finals in June, which will decide who is really the best on the court.
