Roosevelt Prepares for the Downtown Fiesta

April is always a fun and exciting month for all San Antonio residents. Every April everyone gets the chance to enjoy the big fiesta downtown. Much like the Strawberry Festival in Poteet, people come from all around to take part in Fiesta including Roosevelt students. The event always get them from the school into the celebration.

“I love Fiesta. It’s always a happening thing in San Antonio. I’m really hoping I get the chance to go this year,” Mimi Pham, senior, said.

Fiesta San Antonio began as a single event to honor the memory of the battle of The Alamo and San Jacinto. It is the cities largest festival and lasts for eleven days and has over a hundred activities ranging from receptions, parties, and concerts.

“I like to watch all the dancer and the musicians play. I think they are really cool and pretty talented,” Sapphire Neece, junior, said.

With all the activities there are also great parades. There are three major parades- two along Broadway and past the Alamo, and one on San Antonio River Walk where the floats actually float. Although the most famous parade is The Battle of The Flowers. This is the oldest and largest event of Fiesta and happens on the second Friday of Fiesta. This event is especially a favorite of students because they get out of  school the Friday before the parade.

“I really like the Battle of the Flowers Parade, especially because we get out of school for it,” Jimmy Nesmith, sophomore, said.

For students with the taste buds for some lean Mexican food, heading to Fiesta would be a wise choice. It is filled with hundreds of restaurants, vendors, and parlors to find the perfect food for the night. There are also other foods like corn-dogs, hot-dogs, and pizza for those who would enjoy something more on the go.

“I don’t really have a favorite at Fiesta. I just go around and eat everything,” Jesse Rodriguez, senior, said.

Fiesta San Antonio is a major event that takes time and some may think large groups of people to make everything possible but that is not the case in this celebration. Overseeing this massive effort is a single nonprofit organization-The Fiesta San Antonio Commission. The commission is governed by an all-volunteer board of community leaders and representatives.

San Antonio has always presented amazing opportunities for students to take part in learning the history of their great city in the most amusing ways. Fiesta San Antonio is one of many events that makes San Antonio a great place to live and leaves all San Antonio residents anticipating the next event and wanting more.
