Awaiting The Best Batman

By Marcos Perales | Staff Writer |

Robert Pattinson has been chosen to play the next Batman on the big screen. The stakes are high knowing that the caped crusader has been portrayed by several actors over the years, such as Michael Keaton, George Clooney, and Christian Bale. Everyone has their favorite version of Batman, so it’s all based on personal preference. There is no right or wrong. All the Batman actors have done a decent job in the past, but they all lack something. Pattinson will deliver the Batman performance we have all been waiting for.

“The Batman” is going to be shown in theaters starting June 25, 2021. The movie is going to be directed by Matt Reeves.

Matt Reeves has directed movies such as “War for the Planet of the Apes,” and “Let Me In.”

He has also been nominated for the Empire Award for Best Director and Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Feature Film. Batman fans around the world are looking forward to what Reeves will do with one of the most popular comic book characters of all time. The cast is slowly coming together as well. Jeffrey Wright has been cast as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz has been cast as Catwoman, and Paul Dano is going to play The Riddler. There have been rumors saying that Andy Serkis will most likely play Batman’s butler Alfred. Not much else is known about the film, as over a year remains until the film is released. Of course, all the attention is going to be centered on Batman himself. So the question is, how will Pattinson perform as Gotham City’s protector?

Pattinson’s casting has been heavily criticized by the public. Is he not fit to play the Batman? Obviously, there will always be negative comments, no matter what anyone says or does. In this case, Pattinson’s past work is what gave rise to the criticism. The “Twilight” series is what is being referenced the most. Batman is not supposed to be a part of a “dangerous romance,” critics say. While “Twilight” is a love story, it should not affect how Pattinson will portray the lone Batman.

Pattinson’s co-star, and ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart who played Pattinson’s love interest in “Twilight,” fully supports the casting. That support is truly prominent, especially with the fact that Stewart has been Pattinson’s biggest fans after all these years.  Another concern of the public is that Pattinson simply does not “look” like an ideal Bruce Wayne, who is Batman’s alter ego. Reeves clarified that he wasn’t worried so much about the appearance, but the acting experience and skills of the actors. I think that is the best idea, considering “The Batman” has high expectations on how the actors will tell the story.

Going back to the point of the Batman movies lacking something, I believe Pattinson’s portrayal will fill in the void. Reeves is trying something new with the character. In this upcoming movie, Batman will be set towards the beginning of his crime fighting career, lacking some experience. That idea surely gives Reeves a big white canvas to work with. For starters, the batsuit will be like no other. Fans will nerd out at how the batsuit will be almost identical to how it is in the comic books—from the iconic white eyes, to the fully mobile grey bodysuit. The suit itself will be something to celebrate about. The movie will also be loosely based off “The Long Halloween,” one of Batman’s most popular stories of all time. The story follows a serial killer who is active only on holidays, in this case, Halloween, and Batman and Commissioner Gordon work together to bring him to justice. Director Christopher Nolan, who directed The Dark Knight trilogy starring Bale as Batman, admits he used a bit of that comic story as inspiration to direct

the second movie in the Dark Knight series. We can see that in a way, Reeves is already heading in the right direction.

“The Batman” is getting closer and closer each day, and Pattinson is aware.

He is going all in preparing for this role. For those who doubt that Pattinson can fill up a batsuit, his personal trainer Rigan Machado will make sure those worries are out to rest by making sure Pattinson will be in superhero shape. Pattinson has also revealed that he has been doing some reading, specifically tackling all the Batman comic books he can. So with all these exhilarating facts in mind, Batman fans will have to brace themselves for what “The Batman” is going to deliver
