Amazing AVID!

Almost all of school knows what AVID is. We all know the crazy and fun Mrs. Nguyen who runs the class. But what does AVID actually do, and what does AVID even stand for? That’s a question that a lot of students don’t know. But straight from the man himself, I ask Mr. Nguyen all about AVID.

First off, AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. I ask Mr. Nguyen what their goal is.

“Getting kids in college,” he says happily. “And having fun!”

I then asked him what they do in AVID each day and if they do different things every day.

“On Mondays and Wednesdays, we have AVID curriculum, how to do Cornell notes, and Socratic circles. On Tuesdays and Thursday s. we have four college students, and they teach them tutorials!”

So it seems like every day is something different! I asked if I could ask how the students felt about AVID, and he told me go right ahead.

Sam Freund, an eighth grade athlete said, “I feel awesome, I love AVID, it helps me out with my work.”

Then I asked Nora Gonzalez, also an eighth grader, how she felt about AVID as well.  “AVID has helped me a lot, and helped me mature.”

AVID must be great, since all the students in it are raving about it!  Even the environment is great, as I entered the classroom, Mr. Nguyen and his classmates warmly greeted me. He even let me stay to have fun with the other students and talked to me like everyone else in the class.

If you’re deciding whether to be in AVID or not, I would choose to be in AVID. It’s a class dedicated to helping YOU personally, help you get your work done and get better chances for college. AVID is an elective that should stay here for the rest of Jackson history.

Signing off!
