Drawing Up New Ideas

The creative minds of Madison came together after school last Wednesday for this year’s first National Art Honor Society meeting. NAHS is an organization designed to bring together a group students who’ve shown an advanced ability in art and from there to “further [the] creative abilities and talents of the Society’s members, as well as the school’s entire student art enrollment,” as stated in the National Art Honor Society By-Laws.

The NAHS members gathered to select candidates for this year’s officers right away, the open positions including president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and parliamentarian. Each candidate, full of new ideas, stood up and gave a few words on why they’d suit the officer position, as well as expressed the changes they’d like to see in the upcoming year. “I’d like to see NAHS more involved in the school,” Zamirra Thornton, senior art student and vice president candidate, later recapped. “I also wanna do more outside of school and see NAHS involved with hospitals or children or something, because art and creativity is important for kids.”

Once brought up during the meeting, the suggestion of involving more charity work and out-of-school activity resulted in a unified agreement from the rest of the members as well. NAHS members were later encouraged to participate in a few of the upcoming events, including National Portfolio Day on October 5, Chalk It Up on October 12, and to work towards submitting an entry to the Western Art Competition later in the year.

Along with becoming better involved in the community outside of school, the overall organization within National Art Honor Society became a heavily stressed topic. Members discussed the communication issues from last year and from there, brought forward new ideas to improve the communication of this year, including text reminders, a communal calendar, and emails.

The next meeting will take place on November first and officer voting will occur at that time. If you’ve received an invitation to be apart of NAHS, make sure to stop by the next meeting and have your voice heard within the Madison art community!
