Benny’s Tacos Restaurant opened last year to the excitement of students at Roosevelt looking for a quick meal on the run. However, not everyone has been so enthusiastic about the restaurant’s appearance at 5050 Walzem Road.
The restaurant has become a source of frustration for several teachers and administrators concerned that the establishment’s close location to the Roosevelt campus has made it the reason behind numerous tardies to class and in some cases absences or truancies.
The restaurant’s bad news doesn’t end there, lately several students have complained about the overall cleanliness of the restaurant.
“I’m never eating there again. That’s absolutely disgusting. Who ever eats there might be taking their chances,” Niomi Tonsul, sophomore, said.
Benny’s was built after Wendy’s restaurant closed down. Many students were upset that Wendy’s went away, but were glad to have something in its place.
Despite several appears from Roosevelt administration not to serve food to students during school hours, Benny’s management believes they have the right to serve any customers they want at any time regardless of age or consequences involved.
Junior Lorena Cisneros, much like Tonsul, has been disappointed in the service received at Benny’s and is skeptical of the restaurant in general.
“I’m not going to eat there. I’m not willing to get sick or put that stuff in my body. That’s crazy,” Cisneros said.
Not all students at Roosevelt are as critical as Cisneros and Tonsul of Benny’s menu.
“They’re okay. Their lemonade is usually either too sour or too sweet. The after taste is like cardboard. The good thing is their tacos are cheap, but whenever it comes to long lines, they take too long with the orders because there are so many people and not enough staff working behind the counter,” Scarlet Snodgrass, junior, said.
A lot of students go and continue to buy food despite the criticism that has been directed towards Benny’s.
“I honestly don’t care. Those tacos are still really good. Someone can buy me some,” Terrill Lewis, senior, said.
