students to John Paul Stevens High School to compete in VASE – the Visual Arts Scholastic Event on Feb. 23. The day included a thorough quality and qualification check, interviews, and a gallery walk showcasing all of the state qualifiers and pieces that made a four on the point scale.

86 students participated in the competition and 97 medals were awarded. Along with the medalists, four TR students qualified for state: Monteserrath Barrera, Tony Don, Chloe Pargas, and Gabrielle Watson.

“I really wanted to go to State this year despite it being my first time ever being in it,” freshman and state qualifier Gabrielle Watson said. “I was shocked when I found out, I didn’t put much into my piece so the fact that it qualified makes me proud.”

Students are interviewed throughout the day by teachers, and the interviewers are told to look for specific techniques, conflicts while making the piece, overall cohesiveness and the meaning behind each piece. While conducting the interview, the teacher will grade the piece on a four-point scale, which results in a medal if they receive the highest number.
