The girls’ basketball teams have already played two games of their new season in their new gym.

“I’m very excited to see what the [basketball] season holds,” basketball Coach Vanessa Villarreal said. “We have a bunch of new girls so it will be interesting to see how the season plays outs.”

The Lady Mavs opened the season last Wednesday, Nov. 10 with a game against Marshall High School which was a very good start for the Freshman team with a 53-19 win.

“It was amazing to watch the girls play hard and put all they had into it,” freshmen coach Josh McDaniel said. “They came out ready and prepared for the game and they attacked!”

The JV and Varsity teams fell short,  but according to varsity coach Tracy Hastings both teams played hard and gave it their all but were not able to pull through in the end.

“The girls played really hard and did really good the first half,” Hastings said. “but unfortunately we had  a bad second half.”

On Friday, the teams played against Incarnate Word, resulting in a 35-31 victory for JV and losses for freshmen and varsity teams.

“There is nothing we can do about our [loss] but just practice harder and keep our head up,” varsity player Brianna Jones said.”We are a young team and we are still learning. We can only get better from here on out!”

Freshmen and JV play tonight against Taft and varsity plays Taft Tuesday at Paul Taylor gym at 5 p.m.
