Crack it up

Reported by Anahi Avalos

Cascarones are colorful eggs that have little pieces of confetti inside them. During Easter time, you can crack them on people’s heads, releasing all the confetti on them and on the floor. The term “cascarones” is a Spanish term for “eggshells”. They are also used during times like Fiesta and Cinco de Mayo. Every cascarone holds the promise of spring.

Cascarones have religious significance in Catholicism, as they represent new life, and the confetti is symbolic of the joy of the Resurrection and the rebirth of Jesus. Nowadays, everyone enjoys them during different times of the year depending on the holiday. However, if you crack cascarones on Easter, you shouldn’t forget their origin and the significance of cracking them on someone’s head.

In Eastern Catholic Churches, Easter eggs are dyed red (now being dyed any other color) to represent the blood of Christ, with further symbolism being found in the hard shell of the egg symbolizing the sealed Tomb of Christ. However, some people don’t believe in such religious connotations, and they just say that “cracking eggs upon each other’s heads means good luck.”

But Easter is one of the most important times of the year to spend some fun time with your family. You can just chase your relatives, cracking up los cascarones and letting all that confetti go everywhere on everyone’s head, having lots of laughs with one another.

If you want to make your cascarones at home with items from Dollar Tree, you will need eggs, tissue paper, little pieces of confetti, and paint. First, you need to cook and eat the eggs so they don’t go to waste. But don’t crack them like you usually would; crack them from the top like how cascarones are. Then, paint the empty eggs with your favorite color from the outside. Next, dump some confetti in the hole of the egg on top. Lastly, get some white runny glue and make little dots around the hole of the egg on top, and stick a tiny piece of tissue paper. Now, you can enjoy cracking them up!
