The Misunderstood Habit

Self harm or self injury means hurting yourself on purpose. Injuries may be minor, but sometimes they can be very severe, leaving permanent scars and\or causing mental health problems. Most people cut as form of self harm, like using a razor blade, knife, or other sharp object to cut they’re skin. Punching themselves or things like a brick wall,   burning themselves with cigarettes and\or matches, pulling out their hair, poking objects through body openings, breaking their bones and\or bruising themselves are all other forms of self harm..

Self harm is common between the ages of 12-24. It is more common with females than males, which means it is five times greater between the female 12-15 age group. People that harm themselves are usually not trying to kill themselves, but self harm does usually lead to suicide. People that hurt themselves are usually try to make themselves feel something when they feel empty or numb inside. They are really attempting to block upsetting memories, show that they need help, release strong feelings that overwhelm them such as anger, loneliness, or hopelessness, punish themselves, or feel a sense of control.

Self-harm is more common in people who were abused or went through a trauma as children,have mental disorders, such as depression,eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder,certain personality disorders, abuse drugs or alcohol,have friends who self-harm,have low self-esteem, borderline personality disorder, or anxiety.
