Mean Girls (2024) is Fetch: Movie Review

The new Mean Girls movie is fetch but was it one of the best musical movies I’ve ever seen? No.

In Mean Girls (2024) Cady Heron, a homeschooled girl who moves from Africa to America joins the local public school and automatically gets introduced to the IT girls, Regina George and the other Plastics. When Cady suddenly falls for Regina’s ex, Aaron Samuels, she soon realizes that Regina is indeed not who she thought she was.

The movie was pink all around and full of many laughs, but it felt cringey at parts. TikTok had a big influence on this film and they used a TikTok-like phone view for some pieces of the movie. The choreography in this movie was also aimed toward Gen Z and the younger generation. After watching clips from the Broadway musical and kind of comparing the two, you can tell they changed it up a lot to fit the more modern-day appearance.

When it comes to the singing in the film I would say it was good but came off a bit apathetic at times. Also comparing the singing in the movie to the actual Broadway musical, the Broadway version was much more upbeat and felt like it had so much more energy than the current modern version. A couple of actors were possibly given the role because they had the appearance of the character but their singing was off, so they probably had to get taught how to sing professionally for the film itself.

The songs they used for the film got the movie from start to finish, I heard many people were upset that they didn’t use most of the songs or cut a bunch of them down to fit but I thought they were good. Like I said, they got the movie from beginning to end and I didn’t think it was bad in any way. The way the songs were performed was both good and bad in my opinion, some worked and some didn’t.

Overall, I think the movie was good. It had its flaws as do all movies and had me gripping my chair because of the cringe of the movie, but it was cute and I thoroughly enjoyed it generally. I’d say wait to see in the comfort of your couch and home but if you’re a casual theater-goer, I’d say that works too. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 3.5/5 stars is my rating for it.
