The Computer Science team plus junio Miranda Garza and senior Jeanne Suh are headed to UIL region on May 1 and 2. With the weekly practices, hard work and dedication they all placed in the top 3 of their individual or team events at district March 22. The Computer Science got first overall in the entire district. Jeanne got first overall in ready writing. Miranda Garza got third in spelling.  There were overall 16 academic events.

The Computer Science team dedicated themselves and tried their best to succeed at what they loved. The practiced weekly at many different High School locations including, Madison, Judson, Steele, and Somerset.

Elijah Abney was part of the first place team and placed individually fifth in computer science.

“I feel pretty good about being placed, we went to region last year but failed but I am positive we will be going to state this year,” Abney said.

Each test is a little different. Computer Science has both a coding and multiple choice test component. Spelling requires students to correctly write words that are read out loud, and Ready Writing requires students to write an essay on a prompt. Each provides their own kind of stress.

“The whole time I was thinking, ‘I hate writing in pen,'” Suh said.

Journalism student Jesse Pena placed fourth in Editonals and sixth in News making him an alternate to region.

“The UIL district competition was a great experience for me and I placed twice,” Pena said. “Thanks to coach Boerger!”

Computer science coding for region is May 1 at UTSA. Written exams for the other subjects are May 2 at UTSA.
