When you walk into Mr. Riser’s 10th grade English II class, it’s calm and quiet. Music is softly playing in the background as you walk in. You’ll see that his classroom is brightly colored with different things.

Pair that with a natural confidence, and you’ve got a teacher that consistently reaches his students.

“I think I am the coolest teacher because Mrs. Starnes taught me how to be cool and all I have to say is ‘Snaps for Riser,’” he said.

Riser attended went to MacArthur High School and then went to Texas Lutheran University and St.Mary’s university.

“When I went to St.Mary’s and Texas Lutheran I studied English, Spanish, and International Studies,” Riser said.

He got his master’s at St. Mary’s. He has been teaching English II for four years and he’s 25 years old.

“He’ll play music to keep the energy positive and uses humor and current jokes to keep things good,” said freshman David Perez. “He uses life stories to help make teaching fun and a little easier.”

Riser says keeping positive helps him as a teacher as well.

“Building a relationship with the students and getting to know them helps me better myself as a teacher,” he said.

When he’s not teaching, he sponsors the Gay Straight Alliance, swims, hangs out with friends, watches Netflix or goes running.

“Staying fit is healthy and helps keep you sane,” Riser said.
