Reflections Artists Recognized

Last week 60 arts students were recognized in three categories for their outstanding achievements in the Reflections Art contest. Students created visual art pieces (drawings and paintings), submitted photos, and created videos reflecting the theme “The World Would Be a Better Place If…”

The winners were recognized in three groups: Excellence, Merit, and Honorable Mention.

The winners of awards of Excellence in Visual Arts at the school level were Karisha Johnson, Darryus Houston, Araceli Alvarado, David Alvarado, Summer Manion, Aye Po, Sarah Torres, Jasmine Saavedra, Serina Vasquez-Paramore, Ashley Segura, Jayce’Aira Lockart, Charlemagne Scarlett, Jasmine Lodge, Sarah Gutierrez and  Juan Villanueva.

These students went on to compete at the district level where Charlemagne Scarlett’s canvas was chosen as the state representative for the North East Council of PTAs. Additionally, Karisha Johnson, Jayce’Aira Lockhart and Sarah Torres got an Award of Excellence at the District level, while Darryus Houston, Sarah Gutierrez, Summer Manion, Jasmine Lodge, David Alvarado, Aye Po, Juan Villanueva, Jasmine Saavedra, Araceli Alvarado, Serina Paramore and Ashley Segura got all District Awards of Merit.

The winners of awards of Excellence for Photography were Coral Marquez, Amanda Simon,  Hyun Kim, Charlemagne Scarlett, Ana Aguirre, Azalia Cisneros, Anna Vu, April Ponce, Denae Martin, Cenaida Hernandez, Ericka Mae Ojoy, Xavier Klvacek, Sarah Rosales, Emma Pape, Caroline Savell and Victor Rodriguez.

These students went on to compete at the district level where Charlemagne Scarlett’s photo, Searching, was also chosen as the state representative for the North East Council of PTAs. Additionally, Hyun Kim won a district Award of Excellence, Cenaida Hernandez won a district Award of Merit, and April Ponce won a district Honorable Mention for their photography.

Scarlett, the districts’s representative to state for two categories, said she was surprised to find out two pieces were going to state. Her canvas piece had very personal origins.

“For the canvas piece, I had pasted clippings from some journals I had junior year and painted a chrysalis in the center,” Scarlett said. “I felt like my junior year was really depressing, but that I grew significantly, and I wanted to show that with the different thoughts I was having at that time and a cocoon to signify that growth and change.”

Kelton Hill won an An Award of Excellence for his film on bullying, which also received an Award of Excellence at the district level.

At the school level, the following students won Awards of Merit for their Photography: Ariel Jeter, Homero Escamilla, Cassy Neilsen, Xavier Klvacek, Charlemagne Scarlett, April Ponce and Louis Whitworth.

At the school level, the following students won Awards of Merit for their Visual Arts entries: Charlemagne Scarlett, Jorge Vargas, Andrea Barrera, Kiana Barajas, Eduardo Aviles and Chad Bethel.

At the school level, the following students won Honorable Mention Awards for their Photography entries: Victor Rodriguez, Daniela Briseno, Alena Washington, Monika Viola, Louis Whitworth, Ericka Mae Ojoy, Xavier Klvacek, and Myranda Hoffman.

At the school level, the following students won Honorable Mention Awards for their Visual Arts entries: Will Hemenger, Angel Cruz Rivera, Isaac Luna, Keith White, Valerie Byishimo, Kira Manon, Ariana Pendarvis,  and Jahlil Brown.

All the winning work hung in a special display during the holiday performances of the fine arts department.

Students who placed at district will receive awards at a ceremony in March.
