End of semester brings exemptions

Every year, students are able to exempt semester exams for their hard efforts in grades and attendance.

For freshman Giselle Rubio, this semester her first time taking advantage of exemption.

“I feel like I have more opportunities because I feel accomplished of what I’ve done in the first semester,” Rubio said.

Rubio is only one of many students who will exempt this year. However, with there being requirements, not everyone will get a chance to exempt.

This is the case for senior Jayce’Aira Lockhart, who says she won’t be able to exempt.

Forms are found in the front desk of the AP Office.

“I can’t exempt because I’m failing all my classes,” Lockhart said.

In order for a student to exempt, certain requirements must be met. Both tardies and absences are counted towards a students qualifications to exempt.

Grades also affects the chance of exemption. For instance, if a student has one absence and one tardy in a class, the student will need to have at least an 85-89 average in that course to qualify.

In other words, the more absences and tardies a student has, the higher their grade will be required to be to exempt a course.

Exemptions forms will remain open until tomorrow, December 7 and must be turned into the AP Office on that date, no later than 4:30 p.m. Forms can be found in the AP Office or in the link here.

“As a college counselor, I don’t like them [exemptions] because they don’t simulate what testing is like in college,” Mason Walker said.
