National sports in the spotlight

Saturday May 2nd was a big day in sports across the nation. Fans had the night to enjoy a game 7 between the Clippers and Spurs followed by what many dubbed the “fight of the century” between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Manny “Pac man” Pacquiao.

The Spurs and Clippers tipped off at 8 pm eastern time at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Both teams went back and forth for the whole game and it ultimately came down to one man with the ball; Chris Paul. Paul dribbles up the at a steady pace sure of what he’s going to do to prove all the doubters wrong – beat the Spurs. Paul received a pass from teammate Blake Griffin then attacked off the dribble and has a step on Danny Green. Cp3 may have pushed off on the shot, but it was not called. Paul fades in mid air and banks the shot off the glass over the outstretched arms of Tim Duncan. The Spurs came down on the next play ready for an alley hoop to Kawhi Leonard, but the clock was set off prematurely and gave the Clippers the chance to read the Spurs play. The Clippers stole the alley oop pass to Kawhi Leonard and won in a dramatic game 7 to win the series. This was a big moment for the Clippers but more importantly for Chris Paul who has lost multiple times to the Spurs in the playoffs. Spurs fans will be left wondering about what the 2015-2016 spurs roster will look like going into the oScreen Shot 2015-05-11 at 12.40.57 PMffseason. Kawhi Leonard will be a restricted free agent and the Spurs will look to resign him with a max contract this offseason. Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili may or may not return to the Spurs next season and some role players such as Danny Green and Cory Joseph may be won by the highest bidder. The Spurs are also atop All star forward LaMarcus Aldridge’s list. Hopefully Aldridge will come back home to Texas but, it may lead Tim Duncan to retire knowing that there will be a serviceable player in his position.

After 6 years of negotiations, the fight was finally happening. The fight was dubbed the “Fight of the Century” by many, but after the match many people would disagree. Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Manny “Pac man” Pacquiao faced off at 11:30 pm eastern time on Saturday May 2nd at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. Celebrities and Athletes such as Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Denzel Washington and Mike Tyson all attended the anticipated “Fight of the Century”. Manny Pacquiao came oumayweather-pact with Jimmy Kimmel while Mayweather entered with the “Burger King”. Both fighters came out conservative but eventually Manny hit floyd with a combination of hooks and jabs and had Floyd stumbling. Mayweather eventually fled from the corner and the round ended. Floyd continued dodging punches and running away from Manny until the 12th round ended. Two of the three judges scored the fight 116-112 in favor of Floyd Mayweather while the third judge scored it 118-110 leading to a Mayweather win by unanimous decision. Floyd’s record improved to 48-0 maintain his undefeated record.

IMG_8305-0Most people were shocked in sports world when the NFL suspended Tom Brady for the first 4 games of the NFL regular season, after accusations of being at least “generally aware” that the Patriots ball boys lowered the pressure of the footballs below the NFL’s minimum pressure of 12.5 PSI. The New England Patriots organization were also fined $1 million and they will also lose a first round draft pick in 2016 and a fourth round draft pick in 2017. Brady is expected to appeal the suspension and could end up only being suspended 2 games instead of 4.
