Because the beginning of the school year was online, the tryout process for marching band drastically changed. All auditions were done virtually as each student sent in videos of them playing their instrument.
“For last year, we did all auditions virtually and had students submit audio and video recordings of a prepared routine,” Band Director Jarett Lipman said.
For students that are currently online, their band audition will be different from the in-person students.
“They submit a music video and a marching video just like last year,” Lipman said. “We definitely want them to be a part of the band again live as soon as they are comfortable!”
Marching band has multiple levels of auditions and will be having normal auditions for in-person students.
“For marching band, we do two separate auditions one is marching/visual based and one is music,” Lipman said. “The incoming 9th graders only have to do a visual audition/we use middle school director recommendations for the music placement. The visual audition is based on watching students rehearse and see how quickly they learn new material, and also how much returning students have improved from the prior season. Music auditions for returning students are held in May.”
Things have changed for the group. They have implemented more hygienic approaches when they play their instruments.
“We continue to use special masks for rehearsals performance and we social distance when it is possible/reasonable to do so,” Lipman said. “We also use “spit buckets” for the brass to empty their water into, instead of on the floor, and continue to sanitize chairs, stands, and equipment after rehearsals.”
Although protocols changed due to COVID, marching band continues to prevail and perform while following all the rules.
“This year was not easier or harder – just different and we are really proud of the kids for adapting and working through the challenges,” Lipman said.
